As a clinical psychology educatee, I found the introduction far more valuable than the content of the book, for in the introduction the therapist revealed enough of his methods to discredit every single word that was written past the patient herself. Nothing she wrote or came to believe about herself can exist trusted.From 1985 to 1995 an estimated 40,000 Americans, most of them women, were told they suffered from multiple personality disorder. The author of this book is one of those people. She entered therapy due to generalised feet, and after half dozen years of 'recovered retention therapy' that employed techniques such every bit hypnosis and participation in grouping therapy with victims and perpetrators of child abuse, this woman who had no prior complaint of sexual abuse or voices in her head came to believe that she had been repeatedly and brutally sexually assaulted by her step-begetter from the age of 2, and that 90+ divide personalities had formed as a coping mechanism to help her survive this corruption.
In reaction to reading this book, I immediately ordered Elizabeth Loftus'southward book on "The Myth of Repressed Memory", "Creating Hysteria: Women and Multiple Personality Disorder" past Joan Acocella, and "Sybil Exposed: The Boggling Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case" by Debbie Nathan.
It concerns me that consumers of books such at this have no context from which to critique its validity, and shames me that members of my chosen profession were so disastrously wrong on so many things, so recently in our past.

For some reason, though, I didn't want to look up Truddi Hunt until after I finished the book. I guess I needed to come up to terms with the story on my own, which was hard, because it actually read similar a scientific discipline-fiction novel, just similar Dr. Phillips warns in the intro.
One time I had resolved to just read and decide how I felt about it afterwards, it was completely engrossing. My center went out to Truddi and " the woman" and Elvira, and Lamb Chop, and I adored Twelve and Miss Wonderful, and Mean Joe. I hated the stepfather and although I know in my head that it would be incorrect to kill him, I am not positive that I would not take done it, myself. I was also continually impressed by Dr. Phillips' kindness and acceptance and willingness to understand. That is non something you tin can learn in Psych 101. If he wasn't born with that kind of understanding, he worked and sweated and suffered to earn information technology. As a story, information technology held my attention.
However, it is inappreciably a feel-good book. I an very picky well-nigh what I read--linguistic communication, lewd detail, violence. And I did look upwardly Truddi Chase after I finished. She died just last year at the age of 74.
I really don't know if I can believe it or not....If information technology's true, then information technology's definitely i of the nearly harrowing and agonizing stories I have ever read, and if it's not, it'south some damned convincing writing.

This book is damned disturbing. I honestly don't know what to think well-nigh information technology. I saw the "author" on Oprah, and I still don't know if I believe it or not. I have a degree in psychology, and multiple personalities/abnormal psych take always been a particular area of interest to me but this....I actually don't know if I can believe information technology or not....If it's true, then information technology's definitely one of the most harrowing and disturbing stories I have ever read, and if information technology's non, it's some damned convincing writing.

It confused me, information technology scared me, it intrigued me and it saddened me. It is an unbelievable non fiction account that literally makes me questions a time or two if it can really exist true. Information technology portrays the incredible force of the homo mind in the confront of adversity and even the weaknesses of it.

Information technology is an amazing story, and nearly feels like a fanasty. Even having read it, I still fee like I could take no idea what someone like this could possibly be going through, it's horrific and frightening and i hundred percentage engrossing.
At the very least, I should hope all readers accept away from this book a sense of promise and possibly even a sense of guilt for ever having felt like their life was tough. I am amazed this adult female is still live, though the book indicates that the true, 'first built-in' cocky is expressionless due to horrors she could non cope with and never returned from. It is shocking and completely enthralling to watch as personality after personality unfolds, some are born and some die and more selves are created less from the original, just from each sepereate cocky.
I promise this volume encourages people to recollect about how magnificent and mysterious the human heed and spirit are, and the assistance people to realize what abuse and violence tin truly do to a child.
I hate to be a jerk, however, and accuse anyone who, if she did become through all of this, of being less than truthful, but while I may believe in the extreme abilities of the man listen to protect itself, I cannot get equally far equally to say I am convinced that the narrartor's light bulbs burnt out and her car didn't work every bit a issue of 'too much energy ' in her body. I found this book alternatively fascinating, unbelievable, horrifying and silly. I had heard elsewhere that there has been some speculation that the book is not legitimate but in fact is fabricated. When the story line became a little besides weird (as in parts about reading minds and paranormal stuff) and so that speculation kept running through my heed and I became a very cynical reader.I also found the book hard to read in places because of the way it was written (supposedly) from a first person narrative through the various people that Truddi became through her Multiple Personality Disorder.
And my final criticism is that in some places information technology simply became repetitive and dull.
Having said all that, if in fact this book is legitimate and real, information technology tells of a fascinating miracle and explores the world of MPD in a unique style. And the abuses this adult female went through is horrifying. The fact that she survived information technology intact in any way shows simply how strong she was as a person.

Information technology is not the writing that is difficult to read it is witnessing, fifty-fifty through the written discussion, the experience of the writer.
It is a book that volition always have a place of accolade on my bookshelves because information technology is a book of true heroism and filled with hope.

Reading this volume brought me to understand how the mind works to help the body to survive, no affair the trauma or challenge existence experienced. It also helped me to empathise the beliefs of both friends and family who had experienced corruption in early childhood and how those experiences formed their personalities and the fashion they role in the world.

Truddi Hunt was a victim of the worst kinds of abuse from a sickeningly young age. The core personality was essentially destroyed, several layers of personalities adult. Some were unaware of one some other. Some knew others. Some interacted. Only one new all, and information technology was his job to protect the rest from the deepest part of the cave.
Truddi, however, only knew enough to recognize missing fourth dimension, blackouts. She went to a doctor who agreed to aid her, having no thought what he was getting involved with.
The tale is written by many of the personalities, and with the help of other personalities. Nigh all of them are given a voice, and in the process the full story is uncovered.
With her dr.'s back up, Truddi chose to share the tale. Knowing some would refuse to believe, some would mock... Just also knowing that others would see, empathize, recognize... and some of those would be people with similar stories who might desperately need that lifeline to cling to.
Information technology happened, she survived, they can too.
Whether existent or fiction, the bulletin is intense and the tale devastating.

I was horrified at what I learned this poor piddling daughter suffered but she endured with the mental scars to prove information technology. People belittle at multiple personality disorder only it is real. This is a very creative way to survive multiple traumas endured at an early age.

This book is a truthful business relationship of a daughter being raped since the age of 3 by her stepfather. Buuut she didn't kill him, ooo I will say that I fought long and hard to read this book, considering, at times it was very cruel to read what had happened to this women and sometimes I wished that she did in fact kill the stepfather. She didn't deserve what had happened to her and he deserved to be punished for that. As a law educatee we learn that it would accept nevertheless been a crime, simply If I was the lawyer of this women I would definitely plea non guilty and would argue that she acted on self defence force 😉

If y'all're at all interested in psychology and the potential of the human psyche to both splinter and protect itself, then you should read this book.It's both dark and fascinating, especially if you've had whatever interest in child psychology or human nature, like I have... And I'll freely acknowledge being fascinated with the ways the man mind can react to stress and abuse.
The book is not necessarily an easy 1 to read, I should say that upfront. Previously known as multiple personality disorder, Dissassociative Identity Disorder is the topic of much speculation and glamorization through the movies and other avenues, only is quite compelling when y'all expect at the bodily example studies.
Even now we don't know much about DID, and it's still beingness studied - Truddi Chase's story came about long before psychologists knew as much as they do now, and I recollect her story is pretty important. She passed abroad in 2010, but I hope that she will be remembered for years to come.

A more mod take on the "Sybil" acount of Multiple Personality Disorder. This book moves more than quickly and is a bit more than graphic than "Sybil" every bit it was written more recently. Reading the intro and so the reviews of others, I expected that this would be the autobiographical business relationship of The Troops as they initiated therapy, became aware of the others' existence and came to understand the reality of their abuse. What I expected, I suppose, was to read "the manuscript " and then ofttimes referred to.Instead, this reads like a type of historical fiction, the narrative of Trudi and Stanley every bit they worked together. Perhaps written by The Troops but only as a projection of what they idea the process to be. (Unless, of course, the final pages of the book are taken literally, and the reader accepts that The Troops are writing Stanley's perspective considering they *were* in his head. Merely I am not going there.)
My review, then, is on this "historical fiction" narrative and Not on the experience of The Troops.
Despite the horrific occurrences at its foundation, the book was an engaging read. The elements of foreshadowing and suspense did keep me reading although they felt clunky at times. Some of the leaps in agreement that Stanley made still elude me - I suppose I don't grasp D.I.D. enough.
In that location were as well a number of times the writing seemed overly obtuse and convoluted, even when telling seemingly straightforward accounts. For instance, the scene where Albert showtime visits Stanley'southward classroom and is waiting in the hallway. The chat is baffling - who is speaking to whom? And who is the woman Albert is talking to? She makes no other appearance in the text...
Finally, I desire to accept the phenomenon of multiples, or D.I.D. as it is now known. And I want to believe that people would not undertake deception in the proper noun of mental health and understanding. But contrary to the purported intention, this book made a skeptic out of me. Chase and "The Troops" were the authors of When Rabbit Howls, an autobiography describing their childhood life with a sexually psychotic stepfather.In the early 1980s, Chase began therapy to address feelings of extreme fear and distress which she idea might be related to the fact that her stepfather had "fondled" her. What she uncovered with Dr. Robert Phillips was a snakepit of sexual depravity and mental and concrete cruelty.
Without prompting on his part, Truddi Chase revealed herself to exist not one woman, but near a hundred people sharing ane body, interacting with the world through a screen or front end they called "the adult female". Over a ten-year period, these selves, "The Troops" -- men, women and children -- explained to Phillips exactly what had happened. They spoke of pleasance and enjoyment in their lives as well every bit pain.
